It was a mere border skirmish with an overzealous Shu force with no officers of renown in their ranks contrary to who the Wei forces had. Despite having no formal plan and these odds stacked against him, their alacrity put the battle at even. Suddenly, reinforcements for the Wei soldiers in the form of a cavlary unit under Xiahou Ba’s leadership. With this one single batch, the Shu troops were being routed now. After an one more hour of fighting, the remaining Shu forces had retreated. Despite his urges to chase them down and murder every last one of them, Zhongquan had to restrain himself from chasing them; it was a brash move and it had resulted in the death of many officers due withdrawals either being a trap or the pursuer getting too vigorous. Grasping his lance as hard as he could, he could only sigh. After the wounded had been gathered up and the dead buried, Xiahou Ba ordered the troops to retreat to Chencang, a small fortress but vital to the protection of Chang’an.

As the battered troops entered the fortress, much preparation has been taken place. It was a few months after the Wei forces had utterly crushed the Shu forces at Jieting during the massive Shu offensive. Xiahou Ba was able to fight in this battle and helped Zhang He secure victory over the impulsive Ma Su. Sadly, it wasn’t a total victory over them since Wang Ping and Zhuge Liang had thwarted their efforts via clever tactics and stratagems. Nonetheless, it was still a great victory after the initial setbacks with the rebellions of the commanderies.

Yet despite this fact, anger was seething through Xiahou Ba’s body as he went back to the barracks; even as the years had gone by, he still couldn’t forgive Shu for killing his father. Sure, it was war and people die but when it comes to family, it hits harder than usual. Watching his father died just because his bow broke was the most painful thing that Ba ever had to watch. It irked him even more so when Cao Cao ordered a general retreat from the region back to Chang’an and leaving Hanzhong. Like his cousin Xiahou Dun, he could only grudgingly comply with his lord’s orders. In an attempt to deal with this pain, he headed to the tavern to get a drink or two.

thederpman:

Sun Ce heard the sounds of horses galloping in the distance, but he didn’t bother to turn, lest he run the risk of being attacked, or worse, shot from behind. The pain was starting to catch up to him. As another soldier rushed in ahead and he raised one tonfa to deflect the incoming strike. With a last heave of energy, he kicked the enemy backward, his eyes catching glimpses of the arrow sticking out from his face.

Agitated, he snapped part of it and soon his vision began to blur. He sank to one knee, but forced himself to remain conscious, hearing an unfamiliar sound get closer and closer. The Little Conqueror turned and spotted Xiaoqiao and Ma Dai before his sights set back on what was in front of him. He wasn’t sure when they got here, but now that the numbers were a little even they could beat the enemies back, prevent a full scale battle and get back to safety.

Blood swam in his mouth and he was forced to spit it out and continue pushing through the pain. He hadn’t even been aware of an enemy behind him until Ma Dai had gotten closer and clobbered him with the brush. As his ally moved in front of him, Sun Ce heaved a sigh, “Thanks…”

Trying to stand upright, but failing, he pointed at Xiaoqiao, “Get her out of here!”

He didn’t want to have to worry about Xiaoqiao, even if Ma Dai would probably do enough worrying for the both of them. If Xiaoqiao was here, Sun Ce had to entertain the possibility of Daqiao gathering the nerve and fortitude to follow her sister. Ce still didn’t get enough time to react to whoever the hell it had been that was responsible for those revving sounds, but when he saw that armor, pain finally beat him and he fell backward.

He swore to himself, even as he heard more rallying cries, that he would not die here. Not because of this misunderstanding.

“Sun Ce!” Xiaoqiao yelled across the field as she knocked down as many enemy soldiers as she could with one of her twin fans. Once her fan was retrieved after its attack, Xiaoqiao had Luoyue gallop towards him. She got a good look at his lips and saw that he was spitting up blood. It wasn’t a good sign, at all. ‘Get her out of here’? Like hell she’d get out of there. Stupid Sun Ce. “I’m not going anywhere, dummy!” she told him, before he… pretty much kicked the bucket. Not the dead kind, fortunately. “Wah!”

She watched Sun Ce hit the ground and panicked; Xiaoqiao got off of Luoyue to kneel beside him and held the unconscious prince in her arms. “Hey! No, no dying on me, okay?!” Xiaoqiao gave him light slaps to the cheek, hoping it would open his eyes, even for a little bit. She needed some kind of respond out of him. “Hey, are you listening, dummy?!” Oh, what was the use. Xiaoqiao knew he was still alive… barely. Which was why she had to get her brother-in-law out of danger as soon as she could before he really kicked the bucket.

“Huh?” Xiaoqiao looked up, keeping Sun Ce in her arms. She saw a young warrior in armour… blue armour, actually. A warrior under Cao Cao, she assumed. She was not looking forward to possibly fighting him, especially since she had her hands full with her unconscious brother-in-law, but Xiaoqiao felt a good vibe from the blue-armoued warrior.

There wasn’t time for introductions and what not. She had to get Sun Ce to safety. “Lord Ma Dai, I have to get him onto Luoyue— I need your help.”

Before the words could even leave Xiaoqiao’s mouth, Ma Dai swept down and curled his arms firmly around Sun Ce’s body. Using the strength of his legs rather than supporting the weight of another with his back, he pushed up off the ground and moved quickly as possible in order to get the Wu general to safety. Leaning Ce against his shoulder once he rose from the ground, Ma Dai clicked his tongue against the roof of his mouth and summoned Luoyue forward. Reaching for her reins, he tugged her closer and moved to situate Ce’s body just in front of saddle’s horn.

“Are you strong enough to support him?” He asked suddenly, turning to look to Xiaoqiao. He wasn’t insinuating that she was weak—no, he knew she hated that, and he personally knew otherwise—but Ce was rather heavy. Muscle, armour and all, it wouldn’t be easy to bring him back to the capital, and laying him over the horse’s back stomach-down was by no means comfortable for him, unconscious or not. Nonetheless, there was no time—not to mention the Little Conqueror’s body was difficult and awkward to hold from the horse’s side—so with an uncomfortable grunt, he nodded towards his own horse. They didn’t have any time to waste.

“Just take Xingren!” He exclaimed, keeping his grip on Sun Ce relatively tight before stepping up into the stirrup and situating himself into the saddle. Just as he was capable of getting himself situated, he spotted an approaching figure on the horizon; the armour and heavy weapon unknown to him. Immediately on his guard, Luoyi abruptly averted his eyes towards his petite, feminine comrade before bellowing a worried command. With a Wei soldier approaching the current clash of soldiers around them, he had to take as many precautions as possible. Sun Ce couldn’t die here, and he wouldn’t let Xiaoqiao get injured.

“Go, Xiaoqiao!”

With an unfamiliar neigh from beneath him, Luoyue grew anxious and slowly back away from the approaching man cloaked in silver panels, indigo cloth and an off shade of cerulean garnishes, Ma Dai snapped the leather reins down against Luoyue’s neck and began back towards the capital, hopefully via the safest route.

Xiahou Ba could hear the battle cries as he ran towards where the sounds were coming from. He revved up his siege lance as he drew closer until he finally reached the clearing. He saw masses of soldiers surrounding three people. Two of them he couldn’t name right off the back but the other was a no brainer. It was Sun Bofu, the Little Conquerer. It looked like he was injured and dying. Zhongquan wasn’t sure of the circumstances regarding this whole affair but these ruffians were attacking the ally that helped them at Guandu. He just couldn’t let that man die for all his efforts.

Using his left handle to push the handle on his lance forward, he propelled himself through the masses of soldiers to their position and then ending with a 360 slash, forcing all enemies away from them. Resuming his battle stance, he turned towards the trio and observed them for a few seconds. He gave them a smirk and a gesture saying that he will hold off these guys, despite the severe disparity in numbers. Pulling the handle back and revving his lance again, he turned towards the would-be assassins and pointed his siege lance towards them.

The name is Xiahou Zhongquan! Is there anyone who wants to have a bit of fun?

The enemy reacted with bewilderment and awe. This was certainly an unexpected development and the ringleaders did not factor this into their plans. They were also a bit confused by the man himself and the weapon he wielded. It was certainly a most strange weapon and one that hardly anyone else had ever saw. Xiahou Ba turned back and saw the trio riding on their horses. Again, he just smiled and turned towards the enemy again. In all honesty, he was a little scared; he was by himself, no support, vastly outnumbered, and little chance of surviving this battle. He then noticed some enemy horsemen chasing after the trio.

He needed to react quickly and he realized he could try something out, though he would hurt immensely. He revved his lance as much as possible and then released it, causing a huge burst of air to send him flying into the air. He spotted the pursuers and then dove right into them, causing an explosion and sending them flying while the trio as getting away. In doing so though, he felt the pain of the impact all over his body, which was compounded with all the armor that he was wearing. Shrugging off the pain as best he can, he turn to meet the attackers. All he could do now was just smiling and get ready for this.

Never Return Alive [Open (Probably Wu characters first?]

cheerful-soldier:

((OOC: Nothing like torturing your muse, dynasty warriors masterlist!. Also, no, Ce isn’t dying (well he IS but he’s not going to completely die). We currently lack a Quan for Chibi, and in general I like sticking the middle finger up at KOEI’s canon so Ce is gonna liiiiive. Okay in this case, historical canon because Ce isn’t going to die, just be heavily injured. ALSO, YAY FOR MISLEADING YET NOSTALGIA TITLES. Depending on who jumps in, I may lock it to two or three characters since it’s not a huge plot. If they all happen to be Wu characters…oops.))

Something had been unnerving Sun Ce as of late. Whether it had been the non-movement from his enemies or the previous couple of days where that really odd altercation with Xu Gong had taken place, he was unnerved. He had always been a man who was easy to read in terms of emotion—his expressions told a person just about everything they needed to know—and this time had been no different. He was a far cry from his usual gung-ho self, and he decided it was best to try and avoid the rest of his family; he didn’t feel that they should concern themselves with his unease for it would probably be gone by the end of the day.

Although…how could such unease be quelled when he felt responsible for what had happened earlier? Xu Gong was dead because of him and a mere protest. The other man had misunderstood him and in an attempt to get away he backed right off the castle walls and fell before Ce could even try to grab and save him. Ce might have been misunderstood at that moment, but he was still honest; his target never was the Emperor, it was Cao Cao. It always had been Cao Cao. Even though they had been allies at Guandu, their alliance was more or less over. Anybody could see that the Emperor was underneath the man’s thumb and because of that Cao Cao could move about however he wished.

Was attacking Cao Cao just like attacking the Emperor?

Sun Ce was never one to think too hard, but now it couldn’t be avoided. What was he supposed to do, simply accept the situation as it was? Sit around and watch as Cao Cao paraded around so freely? The Hero of Chaos—a title so suiting—only associated himself with people and things he could use to his benefit. And now…

“Gotta worry about something else now.” he sighed, standing up.

He didn’t bother telling his family he’d be out; it’d be just another hunt for sport in their eyes. Perhaps focusing his attention on something he did usually would be enough to divert his focus for a little while. He would seek diversion until the unease had gone away, and so he took just a few men with him and headed out on horseback.

Like always, Ce’s horse had been the fastest and he got separated from his men—they would catch up in a minute or two—but found what might have been the best spot. The moment he dismounted his horse and guided it to a spot to rest, that’s when he heard an audible rustling sound and then sound of a bowstring being drawn. Ce turned sharply, his eyes narrowed but then they widened. The arrow moved faster than he could turn and all he felt was intense white hot pain explode in his face as he staggered and stumbled backward.

“Xu Gong will be avenged!”

Well, at least that feeling of unease had gone away finally.

Adrenaline gave way to anger, not panic and without another thought he removed the arrow, ignoring the blood coating his clothes and spotting on the ground and he dashed toward his attempted assassin before another arrow could be fired, yelling as he did so. He smashed his assassin into the ground only to see a few more appear.

“Damnit…” he muttered to himself, adrenaline still running high. Panic would set in when his attempted killers were dead first. It was unfortunate they were killing him because of some misunderstanding, but he couldn’t exactly defend himself considering Xu Gong was quite dead now.

Attempting to stand upright, he watched as they raised more arrows to fire and a weak grin appeared on his otherwise bloodied face.

“You’re…here for me, right?! Well then…come get some!”

“Isn’t this nice, Lord Ma Dai?” Xiaoqiao asked her fellow tea companion as she brought out her brewing supplies. It was one of their tea-offs again, but this time they decided to take a tiny trip to Xu Chang, rather than go to each other’s castles. Traveling back and forth was a hassle, anyhow… not that traveling to Xu Chang was any better. “It’s been so long since I last saw you! I really missed our tea time together.”

Before she could actually start brewing anything, one of Xiaoqiao’s guards approached her, interrupting precious tea time between herself and Ma Dai. “Forgive me, my lady, but I believe Lord Sun Ce’s been spotted, injured and ambushed. He may be in need of assistance!”

“What?!” Xiaoqiao responded. “I thought Lord Sun Ce was back at home! What’s he doing out here— wait, he’s ambushed and hurt!? Ohhhh, great!” she groaned in frustration. What the hell was her brother-in-law doing, and how did he get himself into that mess? Xiaoqiao knew what she had to do - she had to find him, and save him, or she would have to be the one to deliver sad news to her older sister and her dearest Zhou Yu. No matter how much trolling and hard time Sun Ce gave her, he was still Xiaoqiao’s family and she wouldn’t let him die. She loved that goof, deep down.

“I’m sorry, Lord Ma Dai, but I guess we’ll have to have tea another time…” Xiaoqiao smiled at him, apologetically. “You see, my brother-in-law’s in trouble, and I gotta help him.” She was sure that Ma Dai understood. He had a cousin who also fought in the army, after all. Xiaoqiao had her maids put away the brewing supplies as she walked over to Luoyue, stroking her mane. “We have to go save Sun Ce, okay, Luoyue? Can you help me do that?”

Luoyue responded with a delighted neigh. Xiaoqiao felt proud and gave her a light kiss; before she started to mount her, Xiaoqiao turned back to face Ma Dai. “Lord Ma Dai, if it’s not too much to ask…” she paused.

“Will you help me save my idiot brother?”

A joyful laugh bubbled up from Ma Dai’s chest as he seated himself, as if he’d just reached his destination and come to relax. Indeed, it had been a quite sometime since he was last in Wu, or really since he saw Xiaoqiao last. It really was nice that he was finally able to make some time to visit again; certainly they had much to catch up on. The Shu soldier finally nodded in agreement and proceeded to suck in a breath of air before beginning to speak, however he paused as they were interrupted by an out of breath soldier delivering an urgent message. Snapping his mouth closed, Ma Dai remained in silence as Xiaoqiao and the messenger exchanged words. Ambushed and injured? If that was the case, then why was the soldier here informing them rather than out assisting him? Shifting uncomfortably, Ma Dai heaved a heavy sigh as he moved to stand. He adjusted his robe and armour as he slid his middle finger and thumb into his mouth to produce a loud, sharp whistle immediately after the soldier was dismissed. His mare galloped just as Xiaoqiao began to speak hesitantly. He listened of course, however his eyes were fixed on securing his unconventional weapon behind Xingren’s saddle.

“Need you ask, my lady?” He responded lightly, mouth curving up into a pleasant grin. Reaching out to pat the side of her thick neck, he reached for the reins as he slid the front part of his foot into the stirrup to hoist himself into the saddle. Shifting until relatively comfortable, he tugged his horse next to Luoyue’s side once Xiaoqiao had settled herself.

“You didn’t seriously expect me to wait here, did you?” He prompted, a curious eyebrow raising as if to challenge such an assumption. Even if she did request for him to stay behind, what kind of soldier would that make him out to be? What kind of man? He certainly wouldn’t let her go off on her own, nor would he deny her from physically assisting Sun Ce in his time of need regardless of her social role. He knew more than anyone else how painful it was to sit back while things unravelled—he knew what it was like to feel useless.

With the assumption that she was ready, Ma Dai nodded his head in reassurance and snapped the reins down towards Xingren’s mane. When she snorted in response, he leaned down towards her neck and took off with Xiaoqiao following within his wake.

★

They arrived in time, it seemed. First, the sound of clashing weapons filled the air with the faint metallic scent of blood, but second came the sight of the exhausted Sun son. Reaching behind him, he loosened the straps around his brush as quickly as possible before rapidly dismounting Xingren’s back. He’d only hoped that Xiaoqiao would remain behind for her own safety, but once again he could not condone her involvement. This was her friend afterall, so to bar her from assisting was not something he could enforce. If Sun Ce had been effectively ambushed and injured, then the exploitation of her own vulnerability was extremely high. He would strive to protect her if push came to shove though—both her and Sun Ce regardless of what they were up against.

Hammering one of the cutthroats in the back of the head, Ma Dai immediately moved in to defend him. He seamlessly timed his own attacks with the withdrawal of Sun Ce’s weapon against the final wave of oncoming soldiers and stepped forward with a broad sweep of ink through the air. Dotting the immediate vicinity with ever-shifting blots of paint, a set of tigers erupted and roared in the faces of the perpetrators. For Sun Ce’s sake, Ma Dai only hoped that there were no others lurking nearby with their swords ready or bows drawn.

(I’ll add a little twist

Murmuring his little beat to himself, Xiahou Ba sighed as his small patrol unit walked around the outskirts of Xuchang. While the main battle at Guandu was over, the war wasn’t. Cao Cao had ordered an general-offensive, with Yu Jin and other generals striking the Yuan territory, intent on capitalizing on their success. That means his father won’t be back for a while. He was out subjugating bandits who had aligned themselves with the noble family and Ba got stuck watching the city with Xun Yu. He would rather be out fighting the Yuans and earning glory on the battlefield. However, life would never give Xiahou Zhongquan the chance to prove himself.

With him were just about four dozen guards and a few wagons. Most of them contained foodstuffs, weapons, and other reasonable military items. One, though was different in that it had a few more horses pulling it and was more guarded than the rest. The only contents inside it were two chests but were rather large. Ba heard the gossip of the men under his command. complaining why this wagon had to be brought; some of the other clamor that he heard was rumors about their ally Sun Ce and other groundless talk like that. He just dismissed it since he couldn’t let it get into his head since they had to stay focused on this task, no matter how irksome it was. He didn’t even bother to wear his armour for the occasion.

Suddenly, Ba ordered the company to stop, pulling his clenched fist up. The soldiers were bewildered by this move but he ordered them to keep their mouths shut. He listened as intently as he could to the surroundings and heard nothing. He quickly ordered his men off to the bushes at the right side of the road and told them to be quiet and to wait. Sure enough, some ruffians and what looked like some professional soldiers appeared and gathered around their wagons. Zhongquan gave a stern look of determination to his men and they knew what he meant. He slowly creeped on the ones closely and was able to hear what they were saying.

“I heard that the rest were able to find Sun Ce and they’re now converging on his location.”

“That’s great! Soon, we’ll able able to avenge the death of Xu Gong and the others he mercilessly slaughtered during the Jiangdong wars.”

“YAA! Soon, the wounds that the young fool inflicted to the pride of the Yuans will also be remedied!”

This was the all he needed to hear before he gave the order to surprise these attackers. A quick melee ensued and all but one of the ruffians were easily defeated and killed. The poor soul was captured by one soldier and brought before Ba. The soldier easily confessed the plan since he was just a hired gun and needed money. Nodding and just ordering his men to take him captive he gave out his orders.

Alright, someone ride to Xuchang alone and inform Wenruo about what is happening. The rest of you double time back to the city as well and get some men together. I’ll go to there when the bandit said that they were attacking the Little Conquerer.

There were murmurs of doubt but Ba quickly ordered them off and they complied. Once he was all alone, he went to the wagon and that was heavy and opened one of the chests inside and quickly donned his new armour that was a present from a renowned blacksmith. (The dlc fantasy one) Then, he opened the other to revealed a strange item that he found a while ago. It was some sort of lance that was otherworldly and whose flames could propel anyone across a large distance in a short amount of time. He felt awkward with it and didn’t actively carry it around. Now, it was the time to use this weapon to save Sun Ce. Heading in the direction in which the bandit pointed, he ran as fast as he could where he could heard the rumble of forces converging on the location.

Photo

thederpman:
